Rethinking out of hospital services in North West Surrey
Working with local health and care partners, in autumn 2018 NHS North West Surrey Clinical Commissioning Group launched The Big Picture - an opportunity for local people to join an open and honest discussion about the future of local health and care services, particularly those outside hospital.

The majority of health and care support happens outside our main (acute) hospitals and we know the system isn't working as well as it could. Increased demand from a growing population, the changing needs of people living with long term conditions like diabetes and heart disease, and difficulties in recruiting the right staff are all putting pressure on our health and care system.
Options - January 2020
In January 2020 we asked residents for their views on possible changes to NHS walk-in services in North West Surrey. Residents gave their views on a shortlist of options for future services and discussed how a greater range of support could also be offered in the community.
Our ambition for local people
We want to strengthen the support available for people outside hospital and have a number of aims:
- Making services simple to access so people know where to go for care and support
- Fast and appropriate access to urgent care in line with national best practice
- Fast assessment of people by the right clinician in the right setting
- Making services more joined up so people with different needs can get medical, nursing, therapy, mental health and social care through a single point
- Comprehensive and tailored support for people with the most complex care needs
- Making a wider range of treatments available outside of hospital
- Helping people to get home and return to independence quickly after being in hospital
- Assessing people once so they don't have to repeat their story as they move between organisations
A focus on urgent care
In particular The Big Picture programme is focused on how we might provide walk-in services for urgent care across North West Surrey in the future. Following a national urgent care review, NHS England has published new requirements for this type of care. New Urgent Treatment Centres will standardise walk-in centres and minor injury units and all CCGs need to decide where and how they may wish to designate Urgent Treatment Centres by the end of 2019. Find out more by reading the specification.
This programme will also help us inform the services that will eventually go back into a new healthcare facility in Weybridge, following the devastating fire in 2017. Find out more about the rebuild project. [LINK]
Our case for change
These documents explain why change is needed and the emerging thinking around how we can support people to stay well for longer and reduce the burden on urgent and emergency services.
